Pig (2021)

Reviewed on 2025 May 30

Slightly slow moving, very good movie about a recluse losing his cherished pig and the measures he takes to get her back.

Robin (Nicholas Cage) is a recluse in a cabin in the woods of Oregon, living with his memories and his beloved pig. His pig is a small weapons-grade truffle hunter, who also seems to love her human. She seems more like an oinking Golden Retriever that finds gourmet truffles, a commodity he sells to Amir (Alex Wolff), who superficially seems like little more than the yuppiest yuppie that ever yuppied. When his beloved pig is stolen, Robin reacts as anyone would when a beloved pet is taken. He decides to do everything in his power to get her back, with Amir helping.

This was a movie that snuck under the wire, and that I wasn’t in a hurry to watch because of the name and because I thought Nicholas Cage would be doing his usual Long Legs and Renfield style bombastic acting (which is great but I couldn’t see it for this). This was not it at all. It unwinds a little unevenly but steadily, giving the characters a backstory and a surprising depth. Even the pig seemed to have character.

Three chocolate morsels.
