Bring Her Back (2025)
Reviewed on 2025 October 4
This was a movie I’d heard of from two of my best friends, and I knew little more about it than the three words you need as a main ingredient for any good horror movie: Bad stuff happens. And oh, they weren’t kidding. In the spirit in which my friends told me about this gem, I’ll do my best to return the favor.
Piper (Sora Wong in her amazing debut) and Andy (Billy Barrett) are a tight pair of step-siblings. Their love for each other is evident under the good-natured barbs they fling, and it makes the tension and heartbreak even worse when the unthinkable happens. They are recruited to live in a foster home with Laura (Sally Hawkins), and even though these two have each other’s backs, things go from bad to worse to complete Greek tragedy on steroids and bathtub crank. I really can’t say much more without giving away the warped plot and thus ruining the ride for you so I’ll focus on the other good stuff: the acting was phenomenal from everyone. This isn’t scary so much as tense, to the point I had to pause it a few times. It’s an examination of grief, pain, and the lengths people will go to, to the point some reviewers said it’s a good depiction of narcissism in many parts. I agree with that. The Philippou brothers made the amazing Talk To Me, and when someone asked what they’d do next gave them their beer to hold.
Three morsels. It’s been said that Talk To Me was a metaphor for drugs and this was an examination of grief. I’d love to see what they could do with 120 minutes of righteous anger going all wrong.
