Carrie (1976)

Classic Brian De Palma high school horror flick, about a nerd who snaps after being picked on one time too many.
Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) is pretty much a member of the adolescent damned: she's shy, backwards, and raised by a religious kook of a mother (Piper Laurie) who pretty much thinks that anything that teeters dangerously close to having a good time is a sin. With most of the kids in that school that coupled with her clothing would be enough of a “kick me” sign, but in the film’s opening sequence we see how sheltered she is, and how the other girls react. The other thing that happens is that she discovers she has an unrequested, unwanted gift: she’s a telekinetic. She has so-so control over her “toy” and it seems to get away from her when she’s really upset. When the popular kids decide to prank Carrie on prom night they have no idea what they’re dealing with.
My friend used to have nightmares about the end sequence, but what did me in what the bit where the loopy Margaret White threw Carrie in that closet to pray. It’s an old movie but it’s still a nice creepy late-night flick, plus it has a very young John Travolta. The saddest thing of all is that supposedly, the character of Carrie is based on two people who actually went to school with Stephen King. Even though it came from the polyester decade it still holds up well.
