Brothers (2009)

2009 November 29

Why I won’t be seeing this movie, and why you may wish to pass on this too.

I’m not going to touch on the fact that this is a remake of a Danish film and therefore possibly nosed out an original script that could have been better (well, probably not, but I can dream). Nor am I going to even touch on the fact that this thing looks like an overwrought soap opera, based on the previews.

The real reason I’m passing on this thing is that it stars Natalie Portman, who says the recession is “exciting”. I try to ignore the stupid stuff stars say and do — otherwise I’d never see any movies — but this takes the freaking cake. From her own mouth, and a link to an article with the quote:

“I think it’s kind of an exciting time. I mean, everyone is cutting back. It’s happening in every industry — including our own. All of a sudden, people are doing jobs that they hate and they’re not making as much money as they thought they would or they’ve lost their jobs entirely. I’ve started to see people looking more toward their own passions and what really excites them.”

Yep. Then she bought a castle.

I think if someone is that clueless then I shouldn’t encourage them by giving them any of my money. If enough people do the same, in a few years she may be as excited and passionate as the rest of us puny mortals who wonder how we’re going to pay for our groceries.
